The Suburban Zoo - editEvery Saturday morning, Jemima walked the three blocks from her house to her grandfather’s milk bar alone. Her father drove a freight truck, and her mother worked in a nursing home two suburbs away, so she was left with the responsibility of locking up the house on weekends and travelling into the care of her ancient Poppa. He let her sit behind the counter of the Hillside Lakes corner shop, and, despite her youth, serve the customers. Everything but cigarettes, her grandfather would say with the smile of someone who knew.

Joseph Of The CityJoseph was breast fed until he was six years old. His father thought it would give him a “complex”, and when he was older it was true that he couldn’t go to sleep without a cup of warm milk, but he detected no other lasting or adverse effect. Even this slight idiosyncrasy he was unwilling to blame on his mother, and more likely to claim as a generalised social norm as a middle class westerner. No more bizarre than counting sheep, or smoking cigarettes, but he avoided these habits. Suburban ZooHillside Lakes was neither built into the side of a hill, nor near a lake. It was a suburb built on the remnants of a mining town (before the creeping city had swallowed it in a mouth filled with coloured concrete) so the sewer ran deep and loud beneath the populations feet. One summer, a four-year old fell down one of the broken storm water drains and drowned. Her bloated corpse was fished from the canals two suburbs away, where it had been caught in the narrowing tunnel, and dammed the water until it crept onto the streets. The TrainThe people board the train mostly at one station, and mostly into one carriage on a Friday afternoon during peak time. They coagulate on the platform, and move as one onto the locomotive. They each stand, sit, lean in the third box back from what would once have been called the engine room, but is now a control panel and a place where the driver sits separate from the commuters. A sign above the door inside the carriage reads Public Transport Authorised Officers have the right to: Arrest you until satisfied…Arrest you until you refuse to comply where a maverick has marked out the words which would translate the jargon into instructions. ...for Washington Irving.

I am going to be a published writer in the upcoming months. And I don't mean I am going to start a zine (although, yes, I might do that too) or in the university magazine (although, yes I might be doing this too). I mean I have been accepted for a publication that goes around Australia, and my writing is going to be in it, and I am getting paid for it. Edited. Published. Professional.

There's a zine fair on at Fed Square next month, which is very exciting. Young writers festival and shit. If you are in melbourne and reading this (which it seems unlikely anyone will be, becuse my network on Devart. seems limited at best) you should go. Zines are fantastic.

In the mean time... look out for washington irving.
